Smallpdf is a very complete online PDF platform with a free tier and paid plans. Like most web PDF services, it processes documents on its servers after you upload them.
Toolkoa offers the most common operations (compress, merge, split, rotate, sign and convert between PDF and images) running entirely in your browser. No account, no watermark and no sending your document to anyone.
Real limits: we have no Office conversion, no PDF text editing and no cloud storage integration. Compression re-encodes the images inside the PDF; on documents that are mostly text the savings will be small.
| Feature | Toolkoa | Smallpdf |
|---|---|---|
| Where files are processed | In your browser, never uploaded | On their servers |
| Account required | No | Check their website |
| Paid plans | No, everything is free | Yes |
| Office format conversion | No | Yes |
| Handle sensitive files without sending them | Yes | Requires uploading |
Because your browser does the work, we don't pay for processing servers per file. That lets us offer the tools without paid plans.
It depends on the document. Toolkoa re-compresses the embedded JPEG images without touching the text; scanned PDFs usually shrink a lot, text-only PDFs very little.
Yes, in any modern browser. With very large documents a computer will be faster.
